Description

This curriculum is based on the educational philosophy and writings of Charlotte Mason, who based all learning on self-discovery, living books, notebooking, and learning through experiencing.

In Seashore Science, every lesson contains a reading from the Burgess Seashore Book, an additional short ocean anatomy reading (from one of two additional books), a vocabulary card (when applicable), a video link to a wholesome Youtube video that explains something learned in the lesson in more detail (so children can see the ocean creatures in action), a picture book reading (with links/QR codes to video read alouds of the book when available), and a notebooking prompt (with three variations of notebooks included for different stages of writing).

Additionally, a main activity and bonus activity are included every week with hands-on activities like creating a stinging cell when learning about jellyfish, creating a tide pool, making an edible coral reef, making ocean playdough, and SO much more!

What ages is this for?

This guide is designed for kindergarten through sixth grade, but it can be adapted for older and younger children to truly be family-style. The Teacher Guide includes extension activity ideas for older children, and many of the bonus activities are aimed at the youngest students (play dough, sensory bins, bubbles, etc.).

How long does a lesson take?

This curriculum is designed to present a feast for your children. I provided the feast and you choose which dishes to partake in. It is a very robust curriculum, but desgined to take about 15-30 minutes most lessons, with an additional 15-30 minutes on activity days. You can easily adapt each lesson to fit your family's needs!

The curriculum includes three versions of student notebooks. The notebook for the youngest children contains a coloring page and a space for either the child or parent to write a narration about what they learned. Older children who are able to draw on their own can either use the notebooking prompt included in each lesson to draw and record what they learned or they can draw and narrate about whatever they found most interesting in the lesson. Two different line styles are included for earlier writers and more experienced writers.

The curriculum also comes with printable vocabulary cards to help teach children common ocean-related words that come up in the Seashore Book and other readings. You can hang these up in your homeschool space since they are beautiful AND informative!
