We have read THOUSANDS of books in the last 9.5 years as parents, and we've read soooooo many chapter books aloud the last 4 years since my oldest started kindergarten. Narrowing it down to the collective favorites of all of those has been hard and I'm positive we are missing some amazing ones that I just couldn't remember. I scoured our shelves and Yoto cards (those count as read alouds, too) and dusted off the old archives of my mind to try to remember our favorites and I came up with the 19 in this list!
- The Little House on the Prairie series
- The Chronicles of Narnia series (we've only read two but will be reading the rest this year)
- Heartwood Hotel series
- Burgess Chapter Books series
- Light Keepers series
- The Moffats series
- All-of-a-Kind Family series (we only read one, but the rest are on our list!)
- In Grandma's Attic series
- Matilda
- The Trumpet of the Swan
- The Railway Children
- Anne of Green Gables (this is a series but I would recommend the others in the series for middle/high schoolers because of the themes and content - not inappropriate just more for more mature children)
- The Paddington series (we've only read one, but want to read the rest)
- Winnie-the-Pooh series (we only read one)
- Pippi Longstocking series (we've only read one)
- Little Women
- Mr. Popper's Penguins
- The Ramona Quimby series (my daughter has listened to this on her Yoto probably 20 times! - I really enjoyed the first time we all listened)
- The Betsy-Tacy series
This post does contain Amazon affiliate links. I recommend you check these out from the library or buy them used, but I appreciate all clicks and purchases on these links! Like I said, I'm positive I'm missing another 20 of our favorites, but this is a great starting place. I do have three girls so keep that in mind, but many of these boys would love too. For example, my daughter also loved the Henry Huggins series, but she chose the Ramona over it (since I didn't want multiple series by the same author for this list). I hope this leads to lots of reading in your home!

This was great! I really appreciate that you can vouch for these books being appropriate for children in this age range. Thank you.
