Our Favorite Christmas Read-Alouds

One of our favorite ways to incorporate the Christmas spirit into our homeschool is by reading a Christmas chapter book together aloud!  We have read a few over the years and I've read a couple this year in addition to choose some for us to read this year, and have come up with our top favorites to share with you! Note: This post includes Amazon affiliate links. I appreciate you reading this and anything you buy with our links. The small percentage we makes helps support our little family and this business - so thank you!

Here are our favorites in no particular order:
  • The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street: The Vanderbeekers have always loved their brownstone home in Harlem.  However, shortly before Christmas, their landlord, a recluse, will not renew their lease, forcing the family to move at the end of the year.  The children begin a variety of strategies to persuade their landlord to allow them to stay.
  • The Family Under the BridgeA quite content homeless man in Paris ends up befriending three homeless children when they make a home in his favorite spot beneath a bridge.  The children wish for a new home for Christmas and some amazing events unfold.
  • The True GiftA brother and sister always spend their holidays at their grandparents' farm.  However, this year they try to find a friend for their white cow after their donkey left.  The children go through great lengths that Christmas time to find a friend for the white cow.
  • Nancy and PlumTwo orphaned sisters live in a boarding school where they are constantly punished by the cruel headmistress.  While alone at the school over the holidays, they are determined not to spend Christmas alone.
  • The Best Christmas Pageant EverWhen the outcast family in town ends up taking over the annual Christmas pageant, everyone is sure it will be doomed.  However, they are all in for quite a surprise!
  • A Return to ChristmasWhen one twin brother dies on Christmas day, the living twin becomes cynical and full of despair. This book follows two boys - both the living twin and a homeless con artist with a heart of gold.  With a twist of fate, they find themselves on an adventure of a lifetime.
  • I Saw Three ShipsA little girl lives with her two aunts and is sure something special will happen this Christmas.  She sees three ships through her window on Christmas morning, and three wise men end up visiting their cottage
  • Little Christmas CarolFrom the same illustrator of Little Pilgrim's Progress, Joe Sutphin brings Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol to life with his little woodland creature world.  It's a wonderful version to read aloud as a family.
  • The Best Christmas: A 10-year-old boy learns his older brother is missing at sea and cannot find the spirit of Christmas.  He decides to do something for his family during this hard time and learns a lot about the meaning of Christmas in the process.

I hope you enjoy reading together this Christmas season!
